Entry Fee: 
$25 if registration received on or before Monday May 14 by 5 PM   
      $35: late registration
on or after May 15, including on race day.


     Registration opens at 6:30 AM. Please allow 5-10 minutes to walk/run from parking to the starting line. All 5k participants are asked to be at the start line by 8:20 AM for a pre-race meeting. The 5k run (or walk, if you prefer) starts at 8:30 AM. When you arrive at the state park, follow signs to "Event Parking" -- most racers should park at the Fuller Lake main parking lot, then allow time to walk to the start area at the Furnace Stack (the big stone structure in the center of the park, located "below" the A.T. Museum and general store).

     Restrooms are available at registration.

     Headphones are discouraged.
NO animals/wheels on the course due to safety and room considerations. 


     This event is a fundraiser for the Friends of Pine Grove Furnace State Park. All proceeds support educational and recreational activities at the park. The Friends of Pine Grove Furnace State Park is organized as a chapter of the Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation (PPFF). PPFF is a 501(c)(3) organization registered with the PA Dept. of State; registration information may be obtained by calling toll-free within PA 1-800-732-0999. Registration does not imply endorsement.


     Race shirts (high-tech performance fabric) will be reserved only for registrations on or before May 14Shirt sizes must be received by May 14 at 5 PM so we have time to order customized shirts with our logos. Late registrations will not be guaranteed a shirt (a limited number of shirts may be available on race day -- but we cannot promise a shirt for late or same-day registrants).

     Timing services will be provided by Pretzel City Sports.

Course Description:

     The Charcoal Challenge is a 5K run (or walk) which showcases some of the nicest trails and roads within Pine Grove Furnace State Park. Sections consist of elevation changes and will include rocks, roots and log crossings. The course includes Creek Trail around the family campground and Brickyard Trail, and climbs Quarry Road.

The Charcoal Challenge 5k course for 2018 is the same as in 2017 and prior years. The total distance is 3.1-ish miles. 

Half Marathon and 5k Race Awards:

     Awards Ceremony will start around 11:00 AM.
